Farming

For the second day in a row, in 100 degree temperatures, Gillen chose to go to the farm and work. Nicolas is doing deliveries today and only one guy from his crew is there. I think Gillen may especially like that aspect - being one of the only ones there responsible for "The Farm". He is so much like his father in his enjoyment of hard, physical labor (which is good since Nicolas is turning 40 next year and his body isn't enjoying it all quite so much) and responsibility.

Meanwhile, Jesse and I are here in the air conditioning, choosing the layman's version of farming - a video game called Harvest Moon. The most interesting part of the game for me is watching my boys' choices for a farm wife. They both decided that the stereotypically cute, blue-eyed, blonde-haired, flirty girl (named Muffy) was not for them - actually they even called her ugly. Instead they both chose the straightforward, long brown-haired earthy girl - Celia. I like that. I asked if Celia does a lot of the farm work. "Oh no Mommy," said Jesse. "She is at home with Earth (Earth being the one year old son that Jesse named) - he is her work."

This is definitely my kind of farm.

yikes. the new ugly is the generic blonde, blue-eyed, arm trophy, (read dumb) etc., female — at least on your farm. something in that coconut oil is bringing out the best;-)

carry on your carrying on!

p.s. a "knowing" friend i ran into at whole foods last night agreed w the coconut oil bad rap of yesteryear (where i clearly continue to spend [i mean waste] much time).

Tamar, the wisdom that I have learned about coc. oil from is from a further back yesteryear than that of the recent panic about coc. oils and fat. It's from a time when people ate whole, natural unrefined fats - the way they are produced is a huge part of the story. I could go on and on about the fat thing. I hope we can talk in person one day!

Don't you love it! One of my favorite things about being so close to my kids are these glimpses into their own evolving world-views. What a great mom you are to be playing video games—I keep saving Harvest Moon to learn for the winter once things slow down a bit around here.

Yesterday in the car, my kiddos were re-writing Harry Potter from a homeschooled perspective. lol They love the idea of being witches and wizards, but they just don't dig the whole boarding school aspect. So, they decided that I was a witch, their dad was a wizard, and they were learning at home instead of Hogworts.

No red heads, eh? They make the best farmers' wives.

Danielle, the only video game I usually play with them is the dancing one with teh dance mat. I love that! Other than that, I am just not a gamer. This was big for me. I love that your kids created a homeschooled version of HP!

Stephanie, I actually thought of beautiful blonde you as an example of a non-vapid blondie. You know it was Muffie's airheadness not her looks that made her ugly. They have liked many a blonde friend.
